Spirit of America
My first stop on the way to San Francisco was Crestline, Ohio.
Although not on the original 1915 route, I felt it important to pay them a visit
since they had been so enthusiastic and supportive of the "One Voice" Fire Truck Caravan.
On less than a weeks notice, Asst. Fire Chief, Bill Sharp had put together a huge affair that included
3 or 4 fire engines, several rescue units, two police cars, the Mayor, several members of City Council and 300 to 400
enthusiastic parade watchers.
Had I been on time, it would have been even better...
A short ceremony followed at the Clink Blvd Lincoln Highway Markers,
and then we continued the journey to Galion for the season opening of the Museum.
When I arrived early that morning, I raised the Flag at the fire station like always.
Chief Sharp and several member of the Dept. came out and we took pictures.
Suddenly a car drove by and the Chief ran off and flagged down the driver.
It was City Councilman, Mike Blaising.
Again we took photos and then I said,
"It's time to go, I need to get gas and be on my way."
Mike immediately asked, "How are you paying for fuel?"
To make a long story short, he said,
"The City of Crestline would like to offer you a tank of fuel."
So I said, "Hop in, let's go for a ride."
We went down to the city fuel tanks and began the process.
