A Vision Verified
During the course of many hours of newspaper research,
I have only run across comments or mention of Carl Fisher, the founder on two occasions.
The first was in the South Bend, Indiana when Carl made an appearance at the Bonfire
for the Dedication of the Highway on October 31st 1913
and the second was several weeks ago in Kearney, Nebrasksa.
Recently, I spent the better part of several days scaning the Kearney Hub for LH details
when I tripped over a very interesting article.
Many times people ask me why am I so dedicated, or to use their words obsessed with the Lincoln Highway.
While the simple answer is: Destiny - the more complete answer is to complete the work begun so many years ago.
While certainly one could not do what I do without a "Vision" of sorts,
this is true, but where do I get my vision from???
Why the Visions and Dreams of the early Founders of course.
My "Vision" is mearly a modern day extension of those that have come before.
In reading the many letters and articles it is easy to get a sense of their ultimate goal.
Henry Joy and the others wrote about it on accasion and lived it daily,
but the article in the Kearny Hub says it all.
PLANS FOR THE BEAUTIFIYING THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY
Chicago, Ill-Carl Fisher, the founder and now vice-president of the lincoln Highway Association
has said, "The Lincoln Highway will never be finished.
You and I will be able to drive over it from New York to San Francisco in 1915.
Perhaps ten years from now every mile will be of concrete,
but there will always be something more to do, some improvement to make.
Not only is the Lincoln Highway a perpetual memorial,
but a road to be perpetuated by the energies of future generations.
We are only laying the foundations now."
The best minds in the country are "laying the foundation now"
for the beautification of the Lincoln Highway ..."
"They are working today that the tourist of fifty and one hundred years from now
may cross the country over the most beautiful and inspiring roadway in the world."
"The Lincoln Highway is to be something more than a road-It will be a road with personality,
a distintive work to which the Americans of future generations can point with pride-
an economic but also artistic triumph."
Thus, the Vision is Verivied-from the founder himself...
Need I say more...
Warmest Regards,
