Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Well you'll never guess what happened tonight...
I was hold up in my hotel room here in Evanston, Wy.
The room is courtesy of the Evanston Fire Department.
Seems one of their members owns a hotel, so I'm staying in the owners suite.
Evanston is the last town in Wyoming before Utah and there are several mountains to cross
before I get to Salt Lake some 80 miles away.
The National Weather Service issued Winter Storm Warnings so I thought it best to
wait it out rather than take a chance of getting caught in the mountains with an open cab.
Today is the first day since I began "The Unfinished Journey" on September 7th
that I've had to wait for the weather to clear.
In many cases, it is a welcome relief because it has been nonestop for almost three months now.
Actually spent a little time in the Jacuzzi earlier in the day.
Didn't have any swim trunks with me so had to borrow a pair from the hotel lost and found.
In any event, the phone rang about 6pm.
It was one of the fellows from the Fire Department.
Seems the annual Parade of Lights and arrival of Santa Claus was scheduled for 6:30
and they wondered if I'd like to participate.
I said, "Send someone down to pick me up I'll be ready in 5 minutes."
Done.
So I go down to the lobby to wait for my ride.
Then, get this, all of a sudden this huge Kenworth Fire Truck pulls up and honks the horn...

Didn't have my camera ready at the time, so you'll have to take my word on it...
But this is it...almost 40 feet long!!!

They call is "Tiny Bubbles"...it's a foam truck.
Now that's some taxi service.
The plan was for Santa and Mrs. Claus to ride in the Kenworth so he needed to warm it up.
When we arrived at the Fire House Santa and Mrs. Claus had just arrived from the North Pole.
They took one look at the "Spirit of the Lincoln Way" and said we'd like to ride with Craig.
So I put on my bunker gear and saddled up the ole sleigh.

Here is Santa and Mrs. Claus at the start of the parade.

Then Santa and the Mrs. passing out candy canes.

And what would Christmas be without Carolers...

A boy and his Dog...

and the White Stuff in downtown Evanston.
On the way back to his sleigh,
Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped in several stores to visit with the towns people
when his suspenders broke and trousers started to fall down around his ankles.

Quite an embarr-assing situation as you can see.
Any way with that all taken care of we headed back to the sleigh.
Here is shots of me and Santa

as well as Santa and the Mrs.

When I pulled the "Spirit" back in the station we just barely made it in...

As you can see there are only inches to spare.
Thanks to the Evanston Fire Department, the ole girl has had a warm bed the last two nights.
"And then I sprang to my sleigh and to my team I gave a whistle...
and away we all flew like the down of a thistle.
And then I exclaimed as I drove out of sight
Merry Christmas and to all a Good Night!!"
