The Lincoln Highway Goes Global

Kids,

Well needless to say I made it to San Francisco.
More on that later...

Just as I was about to leave my post at the
California Palace of the Legion of Honor
along came this Black VW Rabbit.

The driver pulled up right in front of the truck and hopped out.

I took one look at his front plate and scratched my head.

It was Wolfgang, a friend I'd met over the internet several years ago.

He's a volunteer for the National Park Service at Crissy Field
and gives a guided tour of "Lands End" once a month which includes
the End of the Lincoln Highway.

He emailed asking for information that would help with his tour.

I sent him a variety of material including some 2X3
commemorative give aways and a Lincoln Highway Plate.

In the rush associated with the final days of the trip
somehow he'd comepletly slipped my mind.

Hard to believe I know,
but every once in a while something gets past me.

But here he was, so it really didn't matter.

Said he was looking out his front window
and saw this huge American Flag.

After some quick catch up we were off in the VW
to check out the 1928 Lincoln Highway marker
at 32nd Avenue and Camino del Mar.

Twice before I'd looked for it and come up empty handed,
so it was with a certain delight
that I climbed in for the short trip down the hill.

See what I mean?

Tell me what you see...

Nothing, Right??

Hard to believe, but sure enough there it is.

OK several days pass and I'm up at the Presidio camped out.

Suddenly I'm awakened by voices.

Hard to belive, but it was Wolfgang just out for a stroll.

He invited me down to Crissy Field to set up the truck.

Seems every year the Park Service hosts a Summer Camp.

Soon there was a multitude of kids chicking out the truck.

They seemed to enjoy the helmets the most.

What do you think??

After the smoke cleared,
they signed the Guest Book.

Then an unexpected surprise...

The Chief of Police was making his final round of the city
before walking out the door to retirement.

Soon it was time to take the flags down,
so Abe pitched in and put "Old Glory" to bed.

With a little help from Wolfgang and the Park Ranger.

But wait, suddenly Wolfgang says,
"What you need is the "World Flag".

Pretty Cool...eh?

There it is again,
Spontanious Combustion!!!

Makes perfect sense with
"Light Around the World" and
The Lincoln Bicentennial kick-off
coming up October 31, 2003.

But where I'm I supposed to find one of those?

Wolgang said, "I'll be right back."

Hard to believe, but he just got one in the mail.

And get this...

The World Flag was actually designed
in San Francisco back in the early 70's.

Where's the Press when you need them??

This was an historic moment!!

Wanted to make sure I got every aspect.

Even the posed shot at the end...

And then there it was...

The Lincoln Highway Goes Global!!!
