The French Connection
Well it was a lazy Sunday Morning...
Spent the morning catching up on phone calls and emails.
Around noon or so fired the "Ole Girl" up and was off
to the Presidio Bowling Alley for a bite to eat
before heading down to the Beach to set up the Flags.
But wait, what's this??

A group of rather strange cars and a crowd to go with them!!!

Upon further investigation they turned out to be French.
Citroëns to exact...from the 30's.
Pretty cool!!

One even had a map attached to the front grill.
Route 66!!!
What's that???
Apparently they haven't heard about the Lincoln Highway.
We'll have to see about that!!
But then what's this??
Mansfield, Ohio on August 5th...
with camping at Mohican State Park in Loudenville.
Will have to get to the bottom of this.
I spoke with the director, Eric.

That's his Number 1 car with the Frog on top
Don't ask, cause I don't know.
He said, "Sure bring your truck right in with the rest of us."
Well actually is was broken english, but I got the point.
Soon all the Frenchies were lined up
to try on a fire helmet
and have their picture taken with Mr. Lincoln.

After that settled down,
I started to put up the flags
when someone suggested we add the French Flag.

Was this REALLY Happening??
What could be more perfect???

The Lincoln Highway was now TRUELY Global!!!
Check out the composition...

Here it is again with all the Citroëns.

And finally without the clutter...

Then the Canadian Firemen showed up as
as did the Australians, each with a pledge
to send a signed fire helmet and participate
in "Light Around the World" on October 31st.
This was too cool!!
I asked Eric what was next...

He grabbed a Battalion Chief's Helmet,
hopped on the truck and began to address the troops.

Over 150 pairs of eyes were focused on the "Spirit".
What's that say on the jacket???
"If you can Dream it, You can do it."
John F. Kennedy
Nuff said...
So it was off to the Golden Gate...

But wait, what about an escort...
and a Fire Truck Escort to boot!!
Sounds great, but does anyone know
how to get to Lincoln Blvd and ultimately
The Golden Gate??

Enter Dennis, a local transport from Dayton, Ohio
who I met the week before at Crissy Field.
With an expert Navigator on board,
the "Spirit of the Lincoln Way" took the lead
and never looked back.

But wait what's this???
At the first stop sign, here comes the Bridge Patrol.
I did a chinese fire drill and we were soon on our way.

That's him up front...
Be sure and check out the picture takers and cheering crowds.
I had to pinch myself.

This is looking over my left shoulder.
Once in Marin, it was off to Vista Point.

We paused to enjoy the senery...

take a few photos

before picking up a few French Hitchikers and 2 film crews.
Half way up to Vista Point we pulled off in the last turn around
and began the trip back to San Francisco.

What a day...
Suddenly, a car came speeding by and stopped to my left.
It was Eric, said they saved a spot for me at the top.
Talk about interesting...
Try backing up Vista Point road in the middle of Sunday Traffic.
Once at the top the Frenchies halted traffic and
guided me in to my assigned spot.
Whew!!!

Then up with the Flags...

Talk about a View...
But wait, it gets better.

Had to put on my Mountain Goat Shoes to get these.

Then it happened...

Everyone got on the
"Spirit of the Lincoln Way"
waved for the cameras
and began to sing the French National Anthem.
It was Magic!!

When I came down from my perch Pandamonium had set in.
Everyone wanted a shot on the "Spirit" with a Fire Helmet.

I gave Eric one of my Flag Vests
made by "Mama Shaw" in Irwin,PA
and one of the Flags that flew on the
"Spirit of the Lincoln Way"
as we crossed The Golden Gate.

He gave me his hat, put a couple stickers on the truck
and said, "Now you're Family."
It was hard to believe...
Nobody wanted to go...

But one by one they began to pull away...

until the last car was gone.
