A Name to Conjure By
After I got over the shock of the Concert Tickets,
I smiled and continued to explain about the Lincoln Highway
as the centerpiece of the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration starting in 2003.
Then it hit me...
On Sunday, November 2, 1913 two days after the Dedication of the Lincoln Highway,
pastors all across the nation gave sermons on Mr. Lincoln
and the Great Highway that bears his Name.
The Reverand Frank G. Brainard of Ogden, Utah gave one of the most famous.
"It is a name to conjure by. It calls to the heroic.
It enrolls a mighty panarama of fields and woodlands;
of humble cabins and triumphant farm homes
and cattle on a thousand hills;
burrowing mines and smoking factories;
winding brooks, commerce laden rivers and horizon lost oceans.
And because it binds together all these wonders
and sweeps forward till it touches the end of the earth
and the beginning of the sea it is to be named the "Lincoln Highway".
It brings back to us the lank figure of the growing boy
walking the country roadway with borrowed books;
the dreaming out, surveying and building of his highway of the soul,
that should stretch from that mysterious ocean of the past, whence he came,
to the mysterious ocean of the eternal, to which he would go;
a highway along whose everyday travel he had a gentle word for the sorrowing,
a hand for the one in trouble, a sharp prod for the indifferent,
a word of council for the perplexed, an inspiration for the doubtful, and love for all;
the highway of the soul of the "Great American".
Rev. Frank G. Brainard

Pretty compelling to say the least!!
So here's how it would play out...
On October 31, 2003 Firemen from around the world light the "Sacred Fire of Liberty"
and form a "Light Around the World".
Then the Ohio State Marching Band perfoms the Lincoln Highway Half time show in Columbus,
followed by the Tabernacle Choir's Special Lincoln Highway Concert
on Sunday November 2, 2001.
Remember, their Sunday broadcasts are carried by over 800 TV and Radio Stations World Wide.
Let me repeat that...800 TV and Radio Stations World Wide.
As part of the service they could read Rev. Brainard's Sermon
and do a series of musical numbers which might include:
The Lincoln Highway March,
God Bless America,
God's Country,
with Mickey Rooney Conducting
and for the Finale-
The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
I get goose bumps just thinking about it...
For those of you who don't know,
the song, "God's County"
is from the 1939 movie, "Babes in Arms",
staring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.

It was the theme song for the 1940-42 NBC Radio Show,
The Lincoln Highway and goes something like this...
"Hey there Neighbor, going my way,
East or West on the Lincoln Highway..."
