The Brule Hilton

Kids,

As I've mentioned many times, no matter where I go,
there always seems to be someone waiting to help or guide me in my Journey.

On this particular day, I stopped at the local Fire Station in Ogalalla, Nebraska like always.

After a short visit with the Fire Chief and photos with his Fire Dog "Smokey",
I was soon, "On the Road Again".

On the way out of town, I decided to stop for fuel.

It was just an ordinary stop at random mind you...

When I went in to pay for the fuel the cashier casually asked about the Fire Truck and the trip.

As I'm sure you can imagine, many times during the course of the trip I'm greeted by interested travelers
and well wishers so the questions didn't seem out of the ordinary.

As the conversation continued, it was obvious she had an interst in The Lincoln Highway
beyond that of the normal person.

She said, "When you get to Brule, be sure and stop at Max's Malt Shop."

Strange, never had anyone give me such specific intructions before.

Well, all I knew about Brule, Nebraska was from my trip three years ago:

1) If you blink you might miss it, well almost, and
2) On the West side of town is California Hill,
a famous site on the Mormon Trail.

You can actually see the wagon ruts, or what's left of them about a 1/4 mile down this road
as they cut through the rugged Nebraska countryside.

In any event, we took photos next to the Fire Truck and I was "Back in the Saddle Again".

It's kinda hard to see, but if you look real close you can see a tiny Angel on her daugthers blouse
and the word Angel painted in Gold Glitter on her coveralls.

So, guess that explains that...

As I rolled into Brule, I thought, "Well, might as well check out Max's Place...".

Hard to believe, but there was a rather large enthusiastic crowd waiting for me.

Well, not really - they were all inside having dinner.

There were no parking spots,
so I just set up in the middle of the street.

That got them up out of their seats and on to the street,

where they all lined up to sign the Guest Book,

then posed for this group shot - that's the Malt Shop in the background.

Even had Max autograph, "The Big Sign".

While all this was going on, Max called the Fire Department...

They soon arrived in numbers as well, but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.

It was now dark.

On several occasions I've taken pictures at night, but they never turn out very well,
so "What's a poor mother to do?"

We went over to the Fire Hall to discuss the matter.

Now, remember, when you're dealing with Firemen,
you're dealing with "Can Do-Resourceful People".

It didn't take but a minute to come up with a plan...

"Light Truck".

And a Home-Made one at that...
You have to have a lot of respect for inovation and inginuity like this.

Think the shot turned out real nice, don't you think??

Next, the Chief put his name to "The Unfinished Journey" as well.

After all that excitment, things soon turned to practicle matters...

What about fuel and a place to spend the night?

Well, first things first...

We hopped in the truck and took a spin down to the local Fuel Depot,
aka, Gas Station and topped her off.

Next thing on the list was a place to stay.

While at the Gas Station,
several Firemen had stayed behind in order to prepare my deluxe accomodations.

When I arrived back at the Station,
they had the TV Remote along with the cable guide placed on my pillow.

Also, please note the Control for the Bed as well.

I think you can see why I call this installment, The Brule Hilton.

What can I say guys??

"Living the life of Riley, I never had it so good!!"

Your Kindness and Generosity have "Touched my Heart".

By the way, that's a 1962 Chevy in the background-still in service I might add.

Speaking of old trucks, here is a shot of their pride and joy.

I think it's a '34 Ford, correct me if I'm wrong.

In closing, I offer their salute to the FDNY Fire Fighters,

as well as mine to you.

You are a "Rare Breed"...

May God Bless You!!
