Number 41

In Honor of the Commander

Dear Friends,

When I rolled into North Bend, Nebraska,
there was only an hour or so of daylight left.

I drove by the Fire House, but it was locked up tight,

so off to the Library for some research
and hopefully the name of the Fire Chief.

My research proved fruitful,
as did my quest for the Fire Chief.

Pages were sent and soon there were many.

After the photo session,
a gentleman from the local VFW stopped by and
invited me to their meeting and the meal afterward.

Not being one to turn down a free meal,
I parked the Fire Engine and walked across the street.

The meeting was in progress,
so I grabbed a seat and began to listen.

I couldn't believe it...

For some reason, this night was Special.

The Post was changing its name to Honor a fallen Commrad.

The wheels began to turn, and then suddenly,
in the blink of an eye,
my Mission was layed before me.

When the meeting broke around 9pm,
I invited everyone to join me outside.

I fired up the "Spirit" and parked her right in the middle of the street.

Then, with full Honors,

I placed the fallen Commander's Picture with battle ribbons
on the side of the truck and raised the Flag 100 feet in the air.

Spotlights illuminated the Flag as it blew in the gentle night breeze
and the crowd looked on in reverent silence.

I rang the Fire Bell 14 times, once for each year of his Service.

It was magic,

everyone took turns and signed the

"Book of Remembrance".

When the Flag was finally lowered and folded,

I wanted to give it to his parents, but knew I could not.

So I wrote an inscription and gave them one of the small American Flags from the Truck.

Like I said...

It was Magic!!!
