"Father of Modern Flag Day"

While not the first to celebrate Flag Day he is considered the
 Father of the Modern Day Flag Day Celebration.

Accordingly, as a young school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin
he place a 10 inch American Flag in an ink well on June 14, 1885
to celebrate "Flag Birthday" and instructed his students to write essays
on the meaning of the Flag.

Then in 1886 he wrote an article for the Chicago Argus newspaper
titled "The Fourteenth of June" proposing an annual observance
for the birth of the flag.

In 1894 the American flag Day Association (AFDA) was founded
which in turn held the first public school Flag Day Celebration
in Chicago's Lincoln, Jackson, and Douglas Parks with over 
300,000 students in attendance.

He was the President of the NFDA for over 50 years
and frequently wrote to and received 
Flag Day Messages
for the President of the United States.
