1872--Colonel
James A. Moss--1941
United
States Army-Retired
Colonel
Moss retired from the US Army after 32 years of service
and founded the United States Flag Association in 1924 as an
"Expression of Gratitude"
to the United States for all it had done for him.
A
West Point graduate, he service in three wars and was
awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry.
He
wrote over 50 books or manuals for the Army
including the Officers' and Enlisted Man's Manual.
As
Director General of the USFA he wrote 32 books on the American Flag
and initiated the first Sunday Vesper Service on the
steps of the
US Capitol for the 150th Anniversary of Flag Day in 1927 as part of the
first ever
National Flag Week Celebration which included the presentation of the
USFA
USFA Cross of Honor to Charles Lindbergh, Bernard Cigrand and Ben
Altheimer.
He
was by far "The Most Connected" of the Flag Day Personalities
with Presidents Coolidge, Hoover and Roosevelt all serving as
Honorary President of the USFA.
In
1929 & 1931 the USFA initiated a
Nationwide Flag Essay Contest
that was sponsored by the
Hearst Newspapers and the Washington Post
respectively that drew several hundred
thousand entries.
The
finalists were selected at the
Sunday Vesper Service
with the winners awarded the
Cross of Honor on flag Day.
In
1929 the 4 winners went on a
Round the World Tour
and in 1931 they traveled by ocean liner
to France and England as
Envoys of Friendship.
